Choosing
Website, custom software or mobile app: which one do you need?
Many business owners ask for an app when they need a website, or for a website when they need a tool for their team. The three are different products with different prices. Choosing the right one first saves money. Here is a simple way to decide.

A website: to be found and contacted
A website is for people who do not know you yet, or who want to check something quickly. They arrive from Google, from a map or from a link. They read, they look at photos, and they contact you, book or buy.
A restaurant shows its menu and takes table bookings. A hotel shows its rooms and its prices. A builder shows past work, before and after. An online shop and a booking site are still websites, with more behind them.
Choose a website when your goal is more customers, and when most visitors will come once or a few times.
Custom software: to run the daily work
Custom software is a tool made for your team. Nobody outside needs to find it. It replaces the spreadsheets, the paper, and the messages that hold your business together.
The signs are easy to spot. The same information is typed in three places. Only one person understands the main spreadsheet. Bookings get lost between the phone, the chat and the notebook. You cannot tell how the month is going without an afternoon of counting.
Examples: one screen to manage the bookings, the staff and the money of two hotels. A tracker for building sites, with photos, tasks and costs. A stock tool for a shop with two branches. Today most of this software runs in a web browser, so it works on a computer, a tablet and a phone without installing anything.
A mobile app: for people who come back often
A mobile app is installed from the App Store or Google Play. It makes sense when people use it often, and when it needs what only a phone offers: notifications, the camera, the location, or working without a connection.
It also costs more to build and to keep. There are two systems to support, a review by the stores before each release, developer accounts to pay for, and updates every time the phones change. And people must agree to install it. Few will do that for a business they visit twice a year.
A loyalty programme for regular customers, a delivery service or a tool for staff who work outdoors can justify an app. A menu or a brochure cannot.
Five questions to decide
- Who will use it: new customers, regular customers, or your team?
- How often: once, every month, or every day?
- What must they do: read, book, pay, or enter data?
- Does it need the phone itself: notifications, camera, no connection?
- What do you use today that almost works?
New customers who come once need a website. A team that works with it every day needs software. Regular users who need phone features need an app.
They can talk to each other
These products are not walls. A website, a team tool and an app can share the same data through an API. A REST API is a standard way for two programs to exchange information over the internet. One asks a question, the other answers in a format both understand.
In practice, a booking made on your website appears in your management tool without anyone typing it again. Your stock updates the shop. Your accounting receives the invoices. You need an API when two tools must stay in step, or when you want to plug in outside services such as payment, delivery or an AI agent.
Start small, then grow
The usual order is the cheapest one. Start with a website, because it brings customers. Add a tool when the daily work becomes hard to follow. Think about an app when regular users ask for it. Each step tells you what the next one should do, and nothing has to be thrown away if it was built properly.
On Vemly, you can post any of the three: a website, software for your team, or a phone app. It is free. Say what problem you want to fix.
