What you need to rent

Four things. Have them ready and you are riding ten minutes after you walk in.

  • A motorcycle licence

Your home licence with the motorcycle category, plus an International Driving Permit, or a Thai licence. A car licence alone is not enough: police checkpoints fine for it and insurers refuse claims. No licence, no rental, on any bike.

  • A deposit, in cash or on a card

3,000 baht for scooters, 10,000 for mid-size bikes, 30,000 for big bikes. Cash in baht, or a hold on a credit card. You get it back when the bike comes back as it left.

  • Your passport, to look at

We check the name against your licence, photograph the photo page and hand it straight back. We never keep a passport as a guarantee, and you should not leave yours with anyone who asks.

  • Ten minutes at the counter

We walk round the bike with you and photograph every mark, show you the fuel cap and the seat lock, and fit your helmet. First time on a scooter? We take you to the quiet lane behind the shop first.

Bikes for sale

Eight on the floor this week. Each has been through our workshop, comes with its green book, and is priced as you see it: serviced, transferred and ready to ride away.

Where to ride from our door

Four rides we send people on every week, shortest first. Ask at the counter and we mark them on a paper map for you.

  1. A pale sandstone ridge with a few people standing on its edge above pine forest, hills fading behind in evening light
    8 kmeach way

    Pai Canyon for sunset

South out of town on Route 1095, past the Memorial Bridge. The car park is signed on the left; from there it is a five-minute climb on steps to the ridge. Be up there by 17:30 in the cool season and ride back with your lights on.

  2. A hairpin bend in a two-lane mountain road seen from above, wrapped in dense green forest
    50 kmeach way

Over Kiu Lom to Tham Lod cave

North-west on Route 1095. The road climbs through hairpins to the Kiu Lom viewpoint at about 1,400 metres, where there is coffee and a view over three ridgelines, then drops to Soppong. Turn right at the market for the last 9 km to the cave, and take a bamboo raft through it with a lantern guide.

    Route 1095 to Chiang Mai

The famous one: 762 curves between here and the Mae Malai junction, then a flat run into the city. Fuel at Pai and again at Mae Sae. Leave before 09:00 to stay ahead of the minibuses. Mid-size and big bikes can be left with our partner garage in Chiang Mai for a 1,500 baht one-way fee.

    The Mae Hong Son loop

Pai to Mae Hong Son town on day one (110 km), south through Khun Yuam to Mae Sariang on day two (165 km), east over the hills to Chiang Mai on day three (190 km), and home over the 762 curves on day four. We print the route, mark the fuel stops and lend you a tyre repair kit.

The workshop

Two lifts, three mechanics, and a parts shelf built around what actually breaks up here: brake pads, drive belts, tubes and clutch cables. Any make, yours or ours. Labour is 350 baht an hour and you get the old parts back in a bag.
